Arista sets sales record

Arista Records yesterday claimed a new sales record was set during the first six months of its fiscal year, which began July 1, 1992.

The Bertelsmann Music Group-owned and -distributed company claimed sales of $ 167 million for the first six months, but did not reveal its previous record.

The company also claimed new monthly sales records in November ($ 42 million) and December ($ 63 million). The previous record was set in October 1989, when the company's sales were $ 20.4 million.

Sales were led by Whitney Houston's hit soundtrack from the film "The Bodyguard," and Top 30 albums from Kenny G, TLC, Brooks & Dunn and Alan Jackson, as well as the soundtrack to the film "Boomerang."

The company holds four of the top 10 positions on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart, snagged by Houston (whose "I Will Always Love You" is the second single to ever sell 4 million units) SNAP, Annie Lennox and P.M. Dawn.
