Acad honors Arriflex's Kaestner
Kaestner is the 10th recipient of the award, established in 1980, which recognizes a lifetime of achievement by an individual "whose technological contributions have brought credit to the industry."
The award, an Oscar statuette, is named in honor of the multiple Academy Award-winning former sound director of the Samuel Goldwyn Studios. It will be presented to Kaestner at the Academy's Scientific and Technical Awards ceremonies March 6 and will be broadcast as part of the 65th annual Academy Awards presentation.
Kaestner served as chief design engineer at Arnold & Richter from 1932 to 1980, overseeing all Arriflex camera and optical development. His design of the spinning mirror reflex shutter, a design incorporated in all modern motion picture cameras, won him an Oscar in 1982, along with Auguste Arnold, also of Arnold & Richter.
In 1937, Kaestner designed the Arriflex 35 Series cameras. The development and engineering of this camera series was recognized with Class II Awards in 1966 and 1973.
