Sears eschews 'Sacred' ads

By REUTERS

NEW YORK--- Sears, Roebuck and Co. said Tuesday it has decided against advertising on future episodes of the controversial new ABC series "Nothing Sacred.''

"There are two reasons," said Paula Davis, a Sears spokeswoman. "We don't think it's an appropriate vehicle for Sears and also in response to customer feedback." She said the feedback has come primarily through a national customer relations phone line.

The giant retailer becomes at least the third advertiser to bail out of the show, which portrays a Roman Catholic priest who questions church doctrine. A Catholic group has called for a boycott of the show.

Davis said advertising had appeared on the first two episodes of ''Nothing Sacred'' in some markets but that no ads would appear on future episodes.

Last week two advertisers, American Isuzu Motors and Weight Watchers Intl., a unit of H.J. Heinz Co., withdrew their advertising from the show.

''Nothing Sacred'' has been criticized by the Catholic League for Religious and Civil Rights, which called for a boycott. The group says it has 350,000 members.
